Design for Media - Explorer

The first few dog breed studies I worked on in preparation for a finished character model or models. I probably spent more time on them than I should have, but I was having fun trying different character styles. I need to work on varying my style more and getting through sketches quicker. I used references from many places including google, several books and photos of my brother's greyhound. Thinking I should go to the dog park or an animal shelter to study and draw dogs from life.

German Shepard

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Greyhound

Feedback is always appreciated :)

Very good! This is exactly what I had in-mind! I agree that you might have spent a bit too long on some of the shading aspects, but I’m not complaining (they are very fun). Try to one-up yourself for next week: try to complete six new pages of six new breeds of dogs (I believe in your skills!). Watch out for that “Balto” style… let your own style come through.

I like your dog studies! I think you should do a Wiener Dog! haha! I know you said that you were experimenting with styles, but they do seem to be getting close to the "Balto/ Bolt" style.

If you are having problems settling into a drawing style I would suggest doing what you already are (studying other artists) but pick and chose what you may like and dislike about a certain drawing. Maybe check out John Nevarez's blog ( http://john-nevarez.blogspot.com/ ) , it has a lot of nice character work posted pretty frequently.

Also, when designing characters just start with the basics. Get the shape of the character's body and head to contrast nicely, and then play with size and placement of feature too.

You already have a good sense of how to draw a character, just try to develop a style, or pick an artist to use as influence and you'll be set!

I'll be in class on Wednesday so you can see the person behind the post. :) Keep up the good work!
